In 1982, Selous Game Reserve was nominated by the United Nations to become a UNESCO "World Heritage Site" due to its ecology.
From the coast extending to the south of Tanzania, Selous Game Reserve is the biggest reserve in Africa. Selous is larger than the country Denmark! The reserve is in the south of Mikumi, which covers 6% of Tanzania's surface area. It is 4 times the size of the Serengeti.
Selous Game Reserve is one of the famous reserves in Africa with remarkable and splendid wildlife and scenery. The animals seen in the reserve are: sable antelope, hippo, lion, buffalo, rhino and elephant. It also has a large and vibrant birdlife of about 400 species including hammerkop, sunbird, hornbill, fisheagle, billstork, secretary bird and kingfisher.
Selous Game Reserve is not a heavily explored area in Africa with an untouched forest area. Over 1600 plant species have been discovered in the Selous area. Due to the Selous' thick, inaccessible forest and River Rufiji, it has become the best shelter for all types of animals, birds and reptiles.
The activites that can be enjoyed in Selous are boat riding on Rufiji River, walking safaris and game drives inside the Reserve. It lies 40 minutes by air and approximately 6 hours by road from Dar es salaam.

Day 1: Dar es Salaam - Selous Game Reserve
-Pick up from DSM city center hotel or residence
-progress to Selous Game Reserve with picnic lunch
-Later in the afternoon, boat safari down the great Rufiji River
-Dinner and overnight at the Lodge (L,D).
You will experience the Rufiji River by boat, meet hippos and crocodiles in good numbers. Quantities of 350 bird species have been verified in the Selous Game Reserve. These are distinctive of miombo woodlands, and the bird life sustained by Rufiji swamplands is of meticulous interest.
Day 2: Game Drive in Selous Game Reserve

-Dinner and overnight at the Lodge (B,L,D).
The Selous Game Reserve is the biggest in Africa, jacketing 54,600 square kilometer. The reserve acquire its name from the hunter and explorer Frederick Courtney Selous. He was murdered here during World War 1. Selous is well-known for elephants. Other species generally seen are lions, buffaloes, wild dogs, elands, baboons, bushbuck, impalas, zebras and greater kudus. It was initially set aside as a hunting area where animals are plentiful but more introvert then the Northern Parks. Excursions by 4x4 vehicle will permit you to have excellent photographic chance and the probability to explore diverse sections of enormous park.
Day 3: Walking Safari in Selous Game Reserve
-After breakfast, early morning walking safari
- After your walking safari, whole day game drive with your picnic lunch
-Dinner and overnight at the Lodge (B,L,D).
Walking safari will give you a predominantly intimate experience for the African wilds. It commences in the morning with a supervision of an armed ranger, takes 2 hours before you meet up the driver at the reserve gate. Walking safaris proffer a high chance of seeing giraffe, zebra, elephant, and good birding.
Day 4: Selous Game Reserve - Dar es Salaam
-After your breakfast depart to Dar es Salaam with picnic lunch (B,L).
