Clarence and Annabel moved from Canada to Belize in 1996 with the idea of semi-retiring. There they built and operated Capricorn Resort on Ambergris Caye, and after a successful eight years in business, they sold the resort in 2003. Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:
At Capricorn Beach Cottages, the management focuses on limiting water use. The continually focus on water conservation such as maintenance on plumbing to prevent and stop leaking hoses, in addition, rainwater caught and stored for consumption.
Capricorn Beach Cottages are committed to involving the local community in their business wherever possible. For example, the accommodation buys locally where ever possible. Also, Capricorn Beach Cottages started Capricorn Casuals, a clothing boutique which employs local tailors and seamstresses giving them the opportunity to use and develop their skills.
On the environmental side, the Beach Cottages only allows the purchase of legal size lobsters for the restaurant, buys Bio bricks for BBQs to reduce charcoal consumption, composts food waste where ever possible
